Bipartisan Governor Coalition Urges Congress to Pass Legislation for Dreamers

December 20, 2017
Press Release

A bipartisan coalition of Governors from across the country, including Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, and governors from Ohio, Montana, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Massachusetts, Vermont, Minnesota, North Carolina, Alaska, and Utah  have signed onto a letter urging Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to protect Dreamers.

The move comes in the heels of Colorado’s Mike Coffman (R-CO CD6) and 30 other House Republicans urging Speaker Paul Ryan to pass a fix for America’s DACA youth this year. There are enough votes in both the House and the Senate to pass the 2017 Dream Act, but Republican leadership has not brought the bill to a vote.

The Dream Act enjoys strong bipartisan support from constituents across party lines. An April 2017 survey of registered voters found that 78% of American voters support giving Dreamers the chance to stay permanently in America, including 73% of Trump voters. Only 14% of all voters (23% of Trump supporters) believe Dreamers should be deported.
