How will this scholarship impact your life? My ultimate goal is to work in health administration to be able to implement new policies or new programs to make healthcare more available to underrepresented populations. I got my bachelor’s in health advocacy, and now I’m doing a master’s in health administration. Getting this scholarship is such […]
Today I called someone, and they told me, "Yes, I’m a citizen now and I'm registered to vote." Both policy and direct impact work are very important to me, because one feeds the other. We’re supporting people on a process like naturalizing, which can be long and stressful, helping people get over this hurdle so they’re ready to vote and make their opinions and voices heard, to be civically engaged in more ways.
But when it comes down to the basics, it’s about me going from not being able to feel safe in saying, "This is who I am," to empowering other directly impacted people to see the power of their words, the strength in their words, and recognize that they can be part of the change.
“I’d say I’ve always been pretty involved with my community and so I don’t think necessarily my relationship with my community has changed. I would say now that it’s my full time job, it’s just kind of amplified. I wanted to get really involved and CIRC was an organization I saw really doing lots of […]

“Two weeks after I started were the DACA walkouts that CIRC and Vic helped organize in 2017, and it was so cool seeing on the headlines, Trump trying to revoke DACA and then being a part of an organization that was leading this massive walkout. It was a tangible reaction to something in the news. […]
“I think I am an accidental activist in a way, coming to the US as a refugee and immigrant, growing up Muslim, being a black woman, I feel like I had to advocate for myself in a way; the system wasn’t really made for me. When I was 13, 14, 15, my aunts would come […]

This year was filled with a mixture of success and powerful learning moments for CIRC. Overall, we are proud to report strides in pro-immigrant policies from expanding the license program for undocumented immigrants to creating pathways to increased funding for undocumented students! However, our work is far from over and there is much progress still needed to ensure that our Colorado elected officials are supporting immigrants and the refugee community who continue to be the most vulnerable among us.
