We are heartbroken and horrified by the violent attack on members of the Jewish community in Boulder this week. We extend our love, solidarity, and support to those directly impacted and to Jewish communities throughout Colorado who are grieving and reeling in the aftermath. There is no justification for this kind of hate-fueled violence. In moments like these, we are called to stand together—to reject division, and to affirm our shared commitment to dignity, safety, and justice for all.
This was a heinous act of antisemitism. And yet, even as people mourn, some have chosen to weaponize the alleged immigration status of the attacker to stoke fear and division. Let us be clear: immigration status is not a cause of violence. Hate is. When we focus on whether someone is undocumented rather than the root causes of this attack—antisemitism, xenophobia, and bigotry—we risk fueling the same cycles of hate that lead to these tragedies in the first place.
Now, reports confirm that the attacker’s entire family has been taken into ICE custody. Punishing a family for the alleged actions of one individual is not justice—it is collective punishment, and it violates the core principles of due process and fairness that this country claims to uphold. No one should be subject to detention or deportation simply for being related to someone accused of a crime.
We will continue to build a Colorado where everyone—no matter their faith, race, or immigration status—can live with safety, dignity, and belonging.
