Denver, CO – On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the Colorado State Capitol became a powerful stage for immigrant leaders, policymakers, and advocates to unite in an impactful press conference hosted by State Representatives Junie Joseph (HD10) and Naquetta Ricks (HD40). The event, focused on elevating the voices of immigrant communities across Colorado, served as both a celebration of resilience and a call to action against dehumanizing rhetoric and policies.
The press conference featured moving testimonials, passionate speeches, and a deeply personal story that highlighted the challenges and contributions of immigrant families in Colorado. Our very own Keilly Leon, the North Regional Organizer for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC), shared her moving story of growing up in Colorado.
Keilly’s Story: “As a DACA recipient and someone who has called Colorado home since I was 8 months old, I’ve seen firsthand how our community has risen above anti-immigrant rhetoric to build a state that values and protects its immigrant families,” Keilly shared. “The policies we’ve fought for—like access to driver’s licenses, in-state tuition, and protections against ICE collaboration—are a testament to the power of resilience and collective action. Now, more than ever, we must carry that legacy forward to ensure every immigrant in Colorado feels safe, valued, and at home.”
Her powerful words underscored the critical role that immigrant communities play in shaping a more inclusive Colorado and reinforced the urgent need to defend and expand protections for all families.
Highlights from the Event:
The press conference also featured a co-reading of a personal story by Cristian Solano-Cordova, a Motus Theater UndocuAmerica monologist, and Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty. Cristian’s narrative detailed the emotional and logistical challenges of strategizing to protect his eight-year-old sister, an American citizen, in the event of their mother’s deportation. The heartfelt performance brought the realities faced by mixed-status families into sharp focus.
Additional speakers included:
- Papa Dia, Executive Director of the African Leadership Group, who emphasized the importance of unity and leadership within immigrant communities.
- Gaby Medina from the American Friends Service Committee Denver & Coloradans for Immigrant Rights, who shared the need to keep fighting for the dignity of all people and a path to citizenship for immigrants who call Colorado home.
- Luis Antezana from Juntos Community who shared their own story of resilience and success, rooted in building strength from and for their community.
- Representatives Velasco, Jodeh, Zokaie and Senator Gonzales all spoke as well about the need for unity and to stand united to protect immigrants in Colorado.
State Representatives Joseph and Ricks also delivered remarks highlighting their commitment to championing the rights of immigrant communities. “Immigrant communities are vital to the fabric of Colorado,” said Representative Joseph. “This event amplified their voices and strengthened our collective resolve to build a state rooted in dignity, equity, and justice.” Representative Ricks added, “As an immigrant myself, I know firsthand the courage it takes to share your story. This press conference was a testament to the power of storytelling in inspiring action.”
A Call to Action:
The event concluded with a united call for policymakers, media, and the public to stand in solidarity with immigrants. The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition reaffirmed its dedication to defending hard-fought victories, from access to higher education and driver’s licenses to protections against ICE collaboration, while striving for a future where every immigrant feels safe, valued, and at home.
The press conference served as a reminder that behind every statistic is a story of courage, resilience, and humanity. It was a moment to reflect on the progress made and recommit to the work ahead—challenging harmful narratives and ensuring that Colorado remains a beacon of hope and opportunity for all.
