Colorado Lynching Memorials: Preston Porter Jr.

November 17 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
1000 1st St, Limon, CO 80828, United States, 1000 1st St United States + Google Map

You are invited to attend a memorial of remembrance and mourning organized by the Colorado Community Remembrance Project, in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative, to honor the life and death of Preston Porter Jr. who was killed by a lynch mob just outside of Limon in 1900. Porter was accused of a murder, coerced into confessing, and was burned at the stake by members of the community.

To remember his life and the legacy of racial terror lynching throughout our country, we will gather at the Limon Railroad Park to deposit soil from the approximate site of his lynching into jars. One jar will travel to Alabama and be installed in the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum and the other will remain in Colorado.

We will gather at the Railroad Park at 2pm on Saturday November 17 to hear powerful speakers and honor the humanity and dignity of Porter and commit to remembrance and justice for those who have been lost to the horror of lynching. After the ceremony, we will move to the Limon Community Building to have coffee and refreshments while we further discuss and reflect on the legacy of racism and racial violence.
