Film Screening: Soufra
October 10 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm&15 – &20
In partnership with Hydro Studios, the International Rescue Committee Denver, the African Community Center of Denver, Friends of Sabeel Colorado, Center on Human Rights Education, and the Center for Middle East Studies, No Lost Generation DU is happy to present a special screening of Soufra.
Soufra follows the inspirational story of intrepid social entrepreneur, Mariam Shaar – a refugee who has spent her entire life in the Burj El Barajneh refugee camp south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam and a diverse team of fellow refugee women as they set out to change their fate by launching a catering company, “Soufra,” and then expanding its reach outside the camp with a food truck business. Together, they heal the wounds of war through the unifying power of food while taking their future into their own hands.
Following the film, an exceptional panel of speakers will take the stage to share their experiences, answer questions, and contribute to the dialogue surrounding some of the film’s key concepts.
Dinner will be provided, with dishes from the film and vegetarian options available. R Bazaar will be on-site selling unique pieces made by their refugee and immigrant artisans. We will also be selling Soufra cookbooks!
Tickets are $15 for students and $20 for non-students. Children 10 are under are free. Proceeds will be going to our Syrian chefs, honorariums for the speakers, and to support No Lost Generation and HydroStudios.
