Write a Letter to the Editor

One of the ways you can take action for immigrant rights is by writing letters to the editor of your local newspaper. Letters to the Editor are widely read and can give an important issue more coverage. This is especially helpful when you are responding to an article that you either support or feel like did not cover the issue fairly.

Some other pointers:

* Reference the article to which you are responding by title in your letter
* All papers require you to include your name, address, and a day and night phone number for verification purposes. The paper will most likely call and verify this information prior to publishing
* Keep it short and simple: Many papers have a suggested word limit (150-200 words) and often a shorter letter is more likely to be published.
* Stick to one topic and highlight a few main points, including how the issue affects the community
* Make your letter personal and from the heart
* Re-read, rewrite, and edit your letter
